I know what you are thinking. Who needs a tutorial on lens hoods? You pop that sucker onto your lens and shoot away. True, yes, that is what you do. But I wanted to demonstrate WHY you need a lens hood when you are shooting in bright light (or in this case I guess we are in the shade but the sun is still very high and keeps sneaking through the trees)
I got a last-minute call to take some pictures of some kiddos going to the Prom this Saturday and left my hood in the car as I was taking pictures until I had the good sense to just go get it. I used my makeshift hood until then (a.k.a my hand) and as I was editing pictures I was noticing how big of a difference it makes just to put your hand up and block the sun from hitting your lens.
Take a look at my example pictures here. The one on top is hazy and desaturated and the contrast stinks. The bottom one, I simply put my left hand up to block the sun while I took the shot and the result is so much better straight out of my camera, which saves me time in Photoshop, which makes me a happy girl.
SO, in conclusion, use your lens hood. It comes with your lens for a reason!
