About Hayley Burk Photography

Welcome to my new photography blog! While I have a super soft-spot for wedding and engagement photography, I love simply being behind my camera with anyone who wants to capture this time in their life. My business is based in Hemet, California, but I provide service to most of the Inland Empire (Temecula, Murrieta, Redlands, Palm Springs, Riverside, and Ontario), Orange County and San Diego County. This blog is where I get to document my most recent photography work, so check back often for my updates and for sales and promotions. Feel free to poke around and if you are interested in a session, simply click on the contact button to send me a note.

A love note {Temecula Wine Country Wedding Photographer}

February 15th, 2012

I got a love note today. You are probably thinking that a lot of people have gotten love notes over the last few days.
But this one was from a wonderful client of mine and made me remember, yet again, why I love what I do. Thank you for your kind words, Ken and Cece!

Dear Hayley,

We can’t thank you enough for the fantastic job you did with the photography of our wedding. The shots are beautiful!
We were impressed with the variety of equipment, cameras, and lenses you brought and with your organization and professionalism, yet you were still so candid and friendly – it was as if we had known you for years even though we had only just met the morning of the wedding. You made us feel comfortable and relaxed, which I imagine is not always easy to do for a bride and groom on their wedding day. And now that we have seen the final product of your work in our finished photos, we are quite impressed with your skill as an artist.
You have a great eye for composition so you truly brought out the beauty of the winery setting in the photos, even though the lighting was not ideal for photography that day. We knew the photos would be tricky since our wedding ceremony was scheduled for the middle of the afternoon on what was forecasted to be a bright, sunny day (without a cloud in the sky or a tree to be seen for any shade). Then we made your job no easier by holding our reception in the Wine Cave where there was only dim candlelight – great for ambiance, but not the best setting for photography. We very much appreciated the extra time you spent in the days prior to our event, visiting the site, working with our coordinator, and preparing for the two extreme less-than-optimal lighting scenarios. Your work paid off. The shots, both outdoor and indoor, turned out great.
Through your photography, you not only captured the joy that encompassed our wedding with clarity and depth, you also captured our personalities. We had a phenomenal time the entire day and we now have fabulous photos to keep those memories for a lifetime. Thank you!
I am happy to recommend you and your company, Hayley Burk Photography, to anyone considering photography options for an event. You are welcome to reprint this letter also and pass along our contact information to any potential clients that have questions for us.

All the Best to You,

Ken & Cece

Green, Brown and Blue {Hemet Family Photographer}

January 25th, 2012

Hmm…Have I captured your attention? Are you wondering why I titled this post “Green, brown and blue?” I’ll give you a hint. It’s not their names or their clothes. Lets see if you can figure it out. I’ll tell you at the end of the post. (And no cheating!)
Here are some of my favorites from my most recent family session with this wonderful family, who happens to be related to me. That’s right. I get to claim all these darling girls as my nieces. I’m so lucky! Enjoy!

Did you notice? Green, brown and blue are the colors of the girl’s eyes. Isn’t that awesome?

Family Photo Catch-up {Hemet family photographer}

January 11th, 2012

I absolutely loved this session with this family. It was an absolutely beautiful day and the trees were all changing colors…it was begging for family photos.
Michelle knew just what kind of session she wanted- unposed, natural shots of her family just being with each other. These kids have such personality! And blue eyes. I’m so jealous. They are stunning. Michelle, thanks for such a great session. You guys rocked it.

Family Mini Session- Murrieta Family Photographer

January 3rd, 2012

It was great to get to photograph this darling family again. The sun was shining, the kids were happy (yay, juice boxes!), and we were through before dad even had the opportunity to start complaining :) (totally kidding, Scott, you were great!) Hope to see you again, Crabtree family!

Ken and Cece

November 15th, 2011

Alright. These guys…are hysterical. I felt like we were cracking up pretty much the entire day. It’s amazing how you can spend just one day with a couple and end the day feeling like you’ve made new friends. Not just new clients.
It was really a treat to spend such a beautiful day with Ken and Cece at Mt Palomar Winery in Temecula. Pastor Charlie Thorn did a beautiful job on their ceremony, and the flowers by MFG floral were lovely, as always. Ken and Cece are such an amazing couple- really, I can’t say enough good about them (and their party! What a great bunch!) Ken and Cece, enjoy your picture preview. Thanks for a wonderful day and for letting me be a part of it.

Photography tutorial- SPOOKTACULAR pictures

October 19th, 2011

Is anyone completely tired of all the Halloween play-on-words ads lately?

“SPOOK-TACULAR SAVINGS!!”

“DEALS SO GOOD…….IT’S SCARY!!”

Oh, man. I’m pretty sure no one has come up with a clever Halloween ad for 20 years. It’s DEATHLY BOO-ring.

Anyway, I was playing around with the kids and the camera the other day taking SPOOKY pictures, as we called them. I thought I’d post a few with a tutorial of how to take your own TERRIFYINGLY TERRIFIC pictures. Here are my examples:

IMG_1912.jpg

IMG_1918.jpg

OK, so the first thing you need is either a tripod or some stable surface to put your camera (well maybe technically the first thing you need is a camera that you can adjust the shutter speed). A lot of p&s (point and shoot) cameras these days will allow you to set the shutter speed as well so check your manual.

Mount your camera and set your shutter speed for about 3 seconds. If you work in manual mode then adjust the aperture and ISO until you get a good exposure. If you put your camera in shutter speed mode then it will likely do all the rest of the settings for you. My settings for these pictures was 3.2 seconds, f/9, ISO 50 but you could make the shutter way longer if you want. You may need to up your ISO if you are in a bright setting.
Now have your ghost stand where you want, lock the focus on them (have them sit or stand VERY still) and push the shutter button to take the picture. About 1/2 way through the 3 seconds have your ghost move out of the frame of the picture.

Once you hear the shutter close again take a look at the preview of your picture and voila! You should have a FANG-TASTICLY BOO-TIFUL picture. *(keep reading for an explanation of how this works…or if you are really bored)

So there you have it. One more tip I have for this tutorial is that if you are still getting slightly blurry pictures try setting the timer on your camera so that you don’t have to manually press the button. Sometimes that can shake the camera as well.

*The reason you need a stable surface or a tripod is because the shutter is open for a good 3 seconds recording the scene in front of your lens onto the sensor. (If you try and hand-hold, no matter how still you think you are, you will still have a blurry picture.) When your GHOSTLY subject stands in the scene for a second, it briefly records them onto the sensor but records all of the scenery the whole three seconds, making your ghost look transparent.

Correction: Family Mini Sessions

October 15th, 2011

‘Tis the time of year for family pictures.
Yes, ’tis.
With the holiday season lurking right around the corner, you need some awesome family pictures, not only for your Christmas cards but for family gifts as well (you know all your mom wants is pictures of her darling kids and grandkids to show off). Well here’s your chance! Short and sweet, mini sessions are perfect for families wanting a quick photo session. I’m only devoting 2 days to these sessions so make sure you book early!

ETA: I realized well after I had posted this that I had accidentally posted the wrong dates. These are the correct dates!

Another reason you should never trash your originals {Temecula Wedding Photographer Hayley Burk}

October 4th, 2011

I’m in the thick of updating my portfolio and I have to say that I didn’t anticipate what a project this would be! It seemed easy enough. Step 1- look through all your old photographs. Step 2- post them on your website. Easy, peasy right? WRONG.

Here’s what I’m having trouble with…I’m seeing all sorts of gorgeous pictures I obviously didn’t notice before, because I never posted them or bothered to edit them.

So then I got thinking…are there MORE of these pictures that I didn’t see any value in back then? And then I got even DEEPER with this thought…if I did that back THEN, then what am I missing NOW? YIKES. (Can you see where this is leading? A complete re-hash of my entire portfolio. Ever. This is going to be time-consuming.

One more note on this subject…sometimes as you learn new techniques or follow new trends, your editing style will change. The way I used to edit photos makes me gag a little when I look back at them. The bottom line is, having your original images will give you the flexibility to go back and make changes based on what suits your current style the best. Make sure and always save the original (I shoot RAW) as well as your edited JPEG for future use. Comprende?

Here are a couple gems I found hidden amongst my yucky-colored, underexposed or out of focus shots that I disregarded immediately. And now? After a little TLC, some of my favorites.

Clint and Alissa {Hayley Burk Photography Temecula Wedding Photographer} {LDS Newport Beach Temple}

August 31st, 2011

I’m so far behind on blogging. Summer was so fun and I had the best time playing with my kids from sun up to sun down.
Clint and Alissa’s wedding was a blast. It was in June and still a great memory. It was one of those ones I didn’t want to end. The whole day was relaxed and uplifting and I really, really loved it. These two are just…fun. They love to goof around with each other and and keep things light and I love that. They were super easy to work with and warmed up to the camera really quickly.
But on top of all this, I have to mention their wonderful family members who were so warm and cooperative. Both sides of the family were easy to talk to and great to work with. I felt like one of the family by the time I left! Thanks for making it such a wonderful day!
